Falling and tipping furniture a danger to kids

According to a new report published in the Journal of Clinical Pediatrics by researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, close to 17,000 children were taken to emergency rooms in 2007 because of furniture falling on them. That number is up 41 percent from 1990. Seventy five percent of the victims were younger than 6. Fortunately, most of the injuries were minor, but according to the report, 3 percent of the 264,200 accidents reviewed required hospitalization--about 300 of these children died.

Researchers say the significant increase in accidents is attributable mostly to the proliferation of heavy flat-screen televisions, which often are placed on top of low stands or entertainment centers. Children can easily climb up and cause the TV to tumble down, and doctors say toddlers often don't have the reflexes or speed to get out of the way. But televisions aren't the only piece of furniture doing harm. Tall bookcases and large dressers also have contributed to the injuries.
