Table before final finish & glass inset on top.
Final dimensions are 12 x 12 x 18.
Stiles were resawn to make the frame--not a 1/4 to spare.  Louvres became panel.  The semi-circles are where the control rods joined the stiles.
Original shutter with what is probably original paint.  One end and half of one stile were rotted through.
The leg blanks sprouted warts as I filled the louvre holes with plugs oriented to match the grain.
I sanded the louvres to redistribute the original paint, then sealed with shellac.  I then trimmed them, planed them to 1/8, and glued them to solid pine substrate to avoid wood movement issues.

A shutter from my great-grandfather's house became a wedding gift table for his great-great-grandson.

Stiles became legs.  Rails became the top frame.  Louvres became aprons and the top panel.

A glass insert (not shown) protects the top panel.

HowardPeson writes: I admire your eye and imagination to see the potential in what would be commonly seen as junk. The history of the materials make the piece real and renewed family meaning. I have done similar by including special family wood incorporated into silverware boxes for wedding gifts for my children and nieces and nephews. It gives me great satisfaction as your project must have done for you. Congratulations! Posted: 9:21 am on October 29th
