I built this unit for books and to display items and for some much needed storage.  The mantel and surround encase a gas fireplace.  Six upper bookcase have 1 fixed and 2 adjustable shelves and beadboard backs. Six lower cabinets provide drawers and an inner shelf.  Materials include mostly birch plywood and hardwood, with MDF raised panels on the doors and 2-layer MDF for the shelves, cabinet top, and mantel, and MDF beadboard.  Lighting is built in to the overhanging crown.  All components were constructed in sections and painted in my workshop and then assembled in place.  The design is my own and started with a general idea and evolved over time.  The whole project took about 4 months of nights and weekends from start to finish.
