I can't be sure of the type of wood that was used, perhaps spruce or hemlock, but it came from some reclaimed quartersawn planks from a set of dimantled school bleachers. The finish consists of a simple wipe-on poly. It was a present to my college-bound daughter and I wanted the design to be simple, practical in use, flush to the wall, stable, with pleasing lines and easy to move.
