Behind Closed Doors
September 29th, 2009 in The GalleryThis is a cabinet that was inspired by Krenov with my own twists and turns. This box has a lot of different woodworking. There is marquetry, turning, carving, and different types of joinery. The cabinet is Padauk, the base is wenge, the handle is wenge, the interior door is maple. There are multiple species for the marquetry on the main door. The top shelf lifts up to a hidden compartment. The Carved door flips down to some storage. The hinges are bruso knife hinges for the main door and SOSS hinges for the carved door. The columns are turned as one, then split in two.
The theme of this is called "Behind closed doors" because it is a fairytale. There is a fairy on the door tending to her flowers. Open the door and you see the carving. You can make up your own story as to what the carved door depicts. This project took several months of night and weekend work. The actual hours are unknown. This was given to my SO as a gift, and she uses it daily. You can see more on this project here: http://lumberjocks.com/kolwdwrkr/blog/7206. This cabinet is described in detail and the link is the last of the blog. At the top of the blog you can see links to the previous posts on the series. From inspiration to how to, it's all there. I hope you enjoy the series.
