Inlayed Jewelry Box

This was a Christmas present for my Mother In Law. The inlay is dyed pearwood. The trays are mahagony and curly maple. The ring trays are foam strips covered with suede. The finish is french polished blond dewaxed shellac.

I made a french curve out of 1/2 inch mdf and used it as a template guide. I clamped the curve to the lid and used a dremel tool with a stewart macdonald base and a 1/32 bit and rode the shaft of the bit on the curve. I would route small sections then reposition the curve. The inlay is dyed pearwood that was spritzed with water and bent around a soldering iron.

I had a question about the inlay. How did you cut the groves for the curves? Did you lay out the lines and then follow it freehand with a scratch stock or did you use another method? I have been looking around on the website but all I can find is how to inlay using a scratch stock inline with an edge. I am making a box for a friend of mine and want to put his initials on the top but I have never done inlay and I am not sure where to start. Thanks for the help.
