I have been working with wood since I was five years old. My Grandfather and my dad were building a cabin in the Sierras back then, when my dad asked me to nail a piece of 2x4 to a tree. At the time, I thought it was an important job, but in retrospect they were probably trying to get me out of the way. Ever since then, I have wanted my own wood shop. Over the years I have built many xmas presents, lots of furniture, built-ins, and my latest project was a set of kitchen cabinets for my house. For the last 20 years or so, my shop has been confined to a small two-car garage (strictly off limits to car parking), which I was quickly outgrowing. I finally broke down and built a 28x42-foot shop, with attic trusses so I could have a man room upstairs. My current project is a Mahogany bar for the man room. I couldnt be happier that I built the shop, and like any space, I seem to be quickly outgrowing it!

Re: Clark Kellogg Wins Gallery Challenge

Nice to have the log back on terra firma, but someone would have found it eventually. Sinker logs are sometimes naturally occuring from blow-downs, and sometimes from the 'one that got away' from a log raft. Still... just a log. Not recycled or reused. Just found.

I really couldn't pick a favorite (personally, I'm kinda fond of the Trestle Candleholders). ;-) I imagine judging the contest is very difficult. Kudos to you guys for your effort. I can't help but think that it would have been a little easier to judge if the projects submitted conformed to the rules of the contest!

Re: Clark Kellogg Wins Gallery Challenge

Wasn't the medium for this challenge to be recycled, or reclaimed wood? As in, "Hey, look what I made out of an old pallet!"

A log on the bottom of a river is just a log, and it's wood really can't be considered reclaimed. Same with a blown-down tree, it has never been anything other than a log.

Re: Oak Trestle Candleholders

Hi Gina,

Ack!!! You're right. That magazine was another project.

You can find the plans for Candles on a Curve in Wood Magazine, issue 145. My apologies!
