I started woodworking about 15 yrs ago as a hobby, at that time I was a finish carpenter. After a few years of woodworking for fun I decided to open my own shop and begin woodworking full time, it was a 3000 square foot shop in an old woolen mill in Grafton, WI. Most of my work back then was kitchen cabinets, entertainment centers etc. After awhile I became bored building kitchen cabinets so I started to get more involved with furniture such as tables, solid wood cabinets, bookcases and beds. Im still building furniture but now I work in a much smaller studio and my focus is mainly contemporary where before I was more involved with Shaker and Arts & Craft. I also let most of my stationary and power tools go and replaced them with hand tools, primarily Japanese. I now enjoy woodworking more than ever and plan to exhibit my work at some upcoming shows.

Re: The Not So Big Workshop

Just wait, as time goes by you will enjoy your small space even more. My current studio is 14' x 12' my previous space was 3,000sf in an old mill. I do not miss the large space, like you said you learn to be more efficient in your space. Years ago I would have never thought about working with hand tools, everything had to be large and powerful, table saw. large jointer, planer, sander etc. All those tools are no long gone and gave way to Japanese planes, saws and other various hand tools. 98% of my work now days is done strictly with hand tools not only because of limited space but because I enjoy the process of furniture making much more now with hand tools. Sure I sometimes miss the stationary machines but I wonder if I could have the skills I do now if I still had the space for them. For me a small studio was a blessing in disguise.

Keep up the good work, you have a great talent.

Re: Isabella's Treasures

Very impressive, great detail. It really does look like a full size piece.

Re: Nakashima Inspired Coffee Table

Thanks for the comment,

The wedges actually bottom out against the underside of the table. As the leg is driven further into the mortise the wedges splay out the tenon locking it in place. I did make a few test joints to make sure the wedges contacted the bottom of the mortise correctly and had the right amount of taper. I did this by making an identical depth mortise in the same thickness Cherry and then cutting off the side so I could see into the mortise. When I drove in a sample tenon I could exactly what was happening with the wedges and tenon.

Re: Nakashima Inspired Coffee Table

Thanks Mike

You actually don't need many tools. This table was made using hand tools. You also don't need a lot of space or money. I now work in a small studio and build similar and larger tables still using hand tools, and you can find ideal slabs for coffee tables under $200.00. You should give it a try, slabs are enjoyable to work with.

Re: The Gadget Station

Re: Nakashima Inspired Coffee Table

I cleaned up the edges with a drawknife followed by sanding to 320. I'll add a few more pics that may give a more detailed view.
