Re: New Yankee Workshop Series Ends

THIS IS TERRIBLE!!!!!!
First David Marks, now Norm ...... no one left.
Except of course those "professionals" on DIY and H&G .... Pleeeeezzzzze!
Goodbye Saturday mornings!
We need to draft someone to get back in the saddle!
How about Fine Woodworking doing a show!

Re: SawStop rolls out a more affordable cabinet saw, aimed at serious hobbyists

SawStop - a great product, IF it came with a lifetime supply of Stop units; and, of my $100 plus Forrest Blades! I understand institutions wanting this, perhaps a business - though it would seem this would be a real costly item for a business. Perhaps the lower cost in insurance would make up for it?
But I'm going to go the route here of we never had this before, why now? Are we becoming more careless in the wood shop?
Does the SawStop make us MORE careful, or less?
Does the SawStop in generally provide more operational pluses that say Delta's new saw (at less cost) does?

Unless SawStop indeed provided me with a lifetime of Stop Units; and, the blades it ruins, I will opt to just be very careful as I use my saw.

Perhaps I will regret this statement one day, but my dad, and my grandfather were avid woodworkers and they passed away with all 10 digits and no close run-ins with the saw. They were mindful, respectful, and careful while using the table saw ..... and similar.

It seems we are being bombarded with new and innovative tools these days. Some great, but how in the world have we gotten along without them? ....... Just fine!

Sorry SawStop. You've come up with a great "invention", but a perhaps costly one that makes us LESS careful in the wood shop.

That's my two cents ..... and a ruined blade to go with it!

Re: Poll: The Next FWW Tool Test

I was rather disappointed in the selection of vote items for the tool test vote. Most, if not all, of them have been done fairly recently. The only one that I don't believe has been, is the air cleaners. My First Choice would have been the multi-purpose tools that are now competing with the WAY OVERPRICED Fein Multi-Master. You know, Bosch, Dremel, and I believe there are at least 3 others. This would necessarily, and almost more importantly, include the available accessories and blades, and their interchangeability. I'm just kind of tire of hearing about the $35-$40 blades (or more) that Fein is pawning off. These are the ones that last about an hour while cutting oak flooring.
That's my 5 cents (inflation from 2 cents).

Re: Who Begot Who? Comparing Planes from Lie-Nielsen, Wood River and Stanley

It is sad to see more of the same thing going on with Woodcraft copying something great and taking it to China to make. Is this truly to make available an affordable plane to those who can not afford a Lie-Nielsen? No. A definite no. It is merely Woodcraft's desire to take sales away from Lie-Nielsen. Why not instead work with LN to perhaps get a better price for Woodcraft and make LN's just a bit cheaper when purchased from Woodcraft?
Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for Woodcraft, but it seems they are becoming more of a "corporation" than a store serving the woodworking community. Their "more than retail" prices on many things, such as whiteside router bits, and so many other things, is testimony to this.
It is becoming a vicious circle of downward descent in retail businesses when they do this sort of thing. When is the last time Rockler did NOT have some new "rockler innovation" for sale in its catalog?
Lie-Nielsen, and those like this company are what we need more of in America and from which we need to stay loyal to and promote.
If you really need a plane, but can't afford a LN, start with a "cheap" (not "too" cheap!) one that can be readily fine-tuned; or, save!!! LN is worth every penny - I never used planes until I got my first LN - now I find excuses to just go "relax" by using my LN. Truly a pleasant experience - right out of the AMERICAN box!!!

Re: Kitchen cabinets from reclaimed ash and pallets

Beautiful cabinets! They are similar to what I was thinking of doing - great inspiration. Only one "criticism" ... when you get a few bucks ...... stove needs to be black!

Re: Tablesaw techniques I wouldn't recommend

I'm sorry Fine Woodworking, but this isn't even worthy of showing on this "fine" site. If anything, it should have been reported through you tube as inappropriate and dangerous. Though I don't mean to slander ...... the guy is a moron, period, especially in having his daughter any where near that shop. If that's what he's doing with his table saw, who knows what else lurks in there. I really loved the cross-cutting of the piece of plywood early on with a miter gauge; and, against the fence. IF THERE WAS EVER A POSTER BOY FOR REQUIRING A LICENSE TO OPERATE ANY, ANYTHING, WITH POWER, THIS GUY WOULD BE IT. NOT FUNNY, IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM. ...... His poor daughter!
